The objective determination of the hydration status is of significant clinical importance in all phases of the treatment of chronic and acute renal failure.

Currently the level of overhydration is assessed on the basis of clinical symptoms such hypertension, respiratory problems or oedema. However, these symptoms frequently occur only in cases of extreme overhydration and may not always be fluid-induced.

The BCM - Body Composition Monitor assists the physician in assessing the hydration status by a bioimpedance spectroscopy measurement of the body composition from which the level of overhydration can be derived. Reference ranges of a healthy population of the same age and gender are provided to permit a quick and easy interpretation of the measurement results.

Apart from the hydration status, the device also determines the patient's nutritional condition. Over the past few years there has been a growing awareness of the importance of the nutritional condition in renal replacement therapy. A decrease in active body cell mass, for example, is often compensated by an unrecognized accumulation of water while the weight of the patient remains stable. The device permits continuous monitoring of the body composition and provides an objective indicator for the nutritional condition: the LTI (Lean Tissue Index) and the FTI (Fat Tissue Index).

The BCM - Body Composition Monitor also permits quick and reliable determination of the urea distribution volume to calculate the dialysis dose (Kt/V).

The BCM - Body Composition Monitor is intended for screening and monitoring of patients with renal diseases within the scope of dialysis therapy and extracorporeal therapies. It can be used in dialysis centers, hospitals, medical practices or in home dialysis.
